Pray a Novena for the Consecration of Russia, Ukraine

The Knights of Columbus today calls on its members worldwide to join a nine-day novena beginning March 17, 2022. Led by Ukrainian Catholics, this novena will conclude on March 25 when Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. This date is historically significant, as on March 25, 1984, St. John Paul II consecrated Russia and the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“During this time of immense suffering in Ukraine, I call on our more than 2 million Knights to devote themselves in prayer to our Blessed Virgin Mary,” said Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly. “Together, we’ll ask Our Lady to intercede on behalf of those directly impacted by the conflict, to give strength to our Ukrainian and Polish Knights working so hard to deliver relief, and to help bring peace and healing to the region.”

“I also call upon all Knights to refocus their devotion to the Holy Eucharist,” said the supreme knight. “The more we devote ourselves to the Eucharist, the more we will understand what it means to be a Knight — to live a life of service and sacrifice for others and to live a life of true unity, centered on the ‘source and summit of the Christian life.’”

Ukraine MTG with Supreme Knight

Worthy Grand Knight:

This morning, I was fortunate to speak with His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and Archbishop Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki of Lviv, Ukraine’s two leading Catholic prelates, representing the Eastern and Western rites. It was moving to hear the witness of both men, who are ministering tirelessly and courageously to a people facing unimaginable stress and turmoil. These two archbishops — both proud brother Knights for almost a decade — expressed their tremendous gratitude for the support the Knights of Columbus has already demonstrated, and which I pledged to continue. I promised that the Knights of Columbus would accompany them and their people both in prayer and material support. I am writing today to ask for your continued help with both.

As you know, the Knights of Columbus launched the Ukraine Solidarity Fund to support our brother Knights and their families, as well as their countrymen and women in Ukraine during this time of intense need. As of this writing, we have exceeded $2.5 million raised by Knights and other donors. Taking into account the Supreme Council’s initial $1 million commitment and $500,000 matching challenge, the Ukraine Solidarity Fund already stands at more than $4 million dollars.

These funds are already being put to use for humanitarian purposes both in Ukraine and in neighboring Poland where so many refugees have fled. In addition to providing food, shelter, medicine and religious goods in the short term, we have also committed to remain for the long haul, to help as Knights always do.

During this Lenten season, I encourage you to support these efforts in two ways. First, I urge you to organize council fundraising events for the Ukraine Solidarity Fund. I have authorized Columbian Award credits for councils who donate at certain thresholds (details will be provided in the next “Fraternal Advisory”). Second, I encourage you and all our brother Knights to pray. Consider holding Holy Hours and rosaries for peace in Ukraine and for those suffering right now. While the benefits of our prayers may not be as tangible as dollars spent on food or medicine, we trust that their effects are even more important. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact fraternalmission@kofc.org.

Your support will have a significant impact on the lives of the innocent Ukrainian people who have been brutally impacted by this war. Thank you.

Fraternally,

Patrick E. Kelly

Ash Wednesday

Brother Knights,

I bring you prayerful greetings on this Ash Wednesday and I hope that this season of Lent will be a grace-filled journey for you and your family.

It has been inspiring for me to witness the tremendous and immediate response of brother Knights around the world to the crisis in Ukraine. Earlier this week, I spoke with the State Deputy of Ukraine, and was deeply moved to hear of the courage and faith of all our brother Knights in his country as they face such adversity. In a special way, I also want to thank our brother Knights in Poland for their tremendous outpouring of support. Just today, Pope Francis praised the response of the Polish people to the Ukrainian crisis, and our brother Knights have been leading the way.

Today, our team shared an update with the media and the wider public about our recent success not only in raising funds but also in successfully getting aid to those who need it. You can find that media release here.

As we enter this season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, I ask you and every brother Knight to continue to pray and fast today, and over the course of these 40 days, for peace in Ukraine. Please also join me in giving alms by contributing today to the Ukraine Solidarity Fund. Your donation will allow us to continue providing much needed clothing, shelter, food and medical supplies to Ukrainian refugees and those displaced within their war-torn nation.

Thank you for your attention to this desperate situation. Our brother Knights in Ukraine and their countrymen face a great challenge. With the support of the Knights of Columbus, we can help them rise to meet it. Thank you for your generosity!

Fraternally,

Patrick E. Kelly
Supreme Knight
