War in Ukraine

Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly and Knights of Columbus staff participate in Mass in the Vatican Grottoes on Sunday, Feb. 20, for the special intention of peace in Ukraine. Father Paul F. deLadurantaye celebrated the Mass in the Chapel of Sts. Benedict, Cyril and Methodius, co-patrons of Europe.

Brother Knights,

The situation in Ukraine is dire and worsening. The people of Ukraine, and our brother Knights and their families in that nation, need our help.

I call upon all Knights to join me in praying for peace in Ukraine, and especially for the safety of our more than 1,800 brother Knights and their families who suddenly face the danger of war. Please also join me in responding to the recent appeal of Pope Francis to join him in prayer and fasting for Ukraine on Ash Wednesday, March 2.

In addition to our prayers, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has committed $1.5 million for immediate distribution to support Ukrainian refugees, including Ukrainian Knights and their families. We will be working with our councils in Poland as well as the Latin and Greek Catholic Churches in Ukraine to provide humanitarian assistance.

Knights of Columbus Charities has launched the Ukraine Solidarity Fund for this purpose, and the Supreme Council will match all funds up to $500,000. Please prayerfully consider contributing to this effort. For additional information about the Knights of Columbus Ukraine Solidarity Fund and how to donate, please visit here.

Let me conclude with the words I addressed to our brother Knights in Ukraine in a video message to them: “In this time of intense danger, know that your brother Knights of Columbus around the world are praying for you, your families and all the people of Ukraine. We ask that our Lord protect you and your loved ones and restore peace in your land. We ask that He give you strength and courage to persevere.”

Fraternally,

Patrick E. Kelly

In 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes, France, to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous as the Immaculate Conception. Today, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, famous for its healing waters, is one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world and the site of the annual Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. On the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11, all Knights and their families are encouraged to seek the intercession of the Blessed Mother for healing and strength.

Warriors to Lourdes: The Fisks’ Story

Following major complications during their son’s birth, U.S. Army Capt. Adam Fisk and his wife, Morgan, were told their baby would suffer long-term brain trauma. They attribute their son’s miraculous recovery to Our Lady of Lourdes, and in 2019, had the opportunity to visit the international shrine in thanksgiving — as participants of the Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage, which brings military personnel and their families to Lourdes, France, for rest, prayer and healing.

Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, the initiative coincides with the International Military Pilgrimage, established in 1946 to promote reconciliation and peace after World War II, and with the Order’s long history of providing hospitality and spiritual resources for military personnel — including the first military pilgrimage to Lourdes, which followed World War I. As the first in-person Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage since 2019 is scheduled for May 2022, you are invited to help sponsor pilgrims and bring healing to military families.

A man with strong Catholic faith and an unparalleled coaching career, Vincent “Vince” T. Lombardi is rightly one of the most revered coaches in NFL history. Within two years of taking over the struggling Green Bay Packers in 1959, he led them to two consecutive NFL championships, soon followed by a third championship, as well as victories in Super Bowls I and II. Lombardi was a member of Msgr. Basche Council 4505 in Green Bay, Wis., and a Fourth Degree Knight. READ MORE

At a Holy Hour at St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven, Conn., Jan. 26, Knights prayed for peace in Ukraine. It is in the Blessed Sacrament that Knights find strength to fearlessly answer Christ’s call to follow him and to serve those who are most vulnerable.
